Cravings, something we all get and which is totally normal.  BUT……. have you ever tried not giving in to them and delved in a little deeper as to why we have them and how to manage them…..

Cravings are not necessarily hunger pangs and when you get to the point of no return of hunger, you’ll do just about anything to curb that hunger.  We at Kick Start call this our HANGRY stage..  and it’s then that you will grab whatever is the closest to satisfy that hunger, fuel the body, get that fix.

A craving is a hankering for a certain type of food and that usually comes in the form that wouldn’t be part of a healthy eating plan

But where do they come from and how do we stop them?

It’s your brain and your brain and gut have a very strong link.  Craving a certain food creates mental imagery which accompany your craving and as a result brain fog sets and there’s less brain power available to perform other cognitive tasks.

It’s like a roller coaster, you eat the food you crave and it gives you that high fix for a short period of time but them BOOM! within an hour you’re hungry again, the flood gates have opened and insulin levels spiked, and by the end of the day you’ve been on that rollercoaster for most of the day.

Try some of these top tips to stop FOOD CRAVINGS

  1. Eat protein at every meal which keeps you fuller for longer
  2. Fill your cupboards/fridge with healthy snacks and keep the sugary foods to a minimum
  3. Drink plenty of water. De-hydration is sometimes mistaken by your body as hunger
  4. Go for a 5:2 approach with your nutrition allowing yourself wiggle room at the weekend. DON’T DEMONISE FOODS
  5. Keep busy and find things to replace bordom, especially nightime nibbling
  6. Get to know your body and when you crave these foods, stressful situations, time of the month, Mondays after a indulgent weekend
  7.  Prep your food and make a plan for the week ensuring you have what you need in the cupboards to stay on track
